Synopsis

The play tells the story of political manoeuvrings taking place at the Marsovian Embassy in Paris. The heroine, Sonia, has recently inherited her late husband's fortune and as an elligible widow she is now the target of many ardent suitors. This poses a problem for the Ambassador, Baron Popov, who must find a way to keep Sonia from marrying a foreigner in order to prevent her fortune leaving (and bankrupting) the country. The answer is to engineer a match to the debonair Count Danilo, who had once been her lover. Danilo's aristocratic uncle had forbidden him to marry her then because she was poor. Now he declares he cannot marry her because she is too rich! Meanwhile the Baron's wife, Natalie, is secretly conducting an affair with a French officer. The two love affairs then become entwined in a charming tale of romantic intrigue and misunderstandings. When Baron Popov almost discovers his wife in a compromising position with her lover Sonia takes her place - much to the chagrin of Danilo who is consumed with jealousy. Taking this as a sign of his love for her, Sonia explains the true circumstances to Danilo and removes his objections to marrying her by revealing that she would then no longer be rich, since the terms of her late-husband's will mean she must lose her inheritance upon remarriage. Danilo promptly proposes, Sonia accepts, and only then informs him that the lost inheritance passes instead to her new husband!
